The Diffuser: A Solid Investment for Your Health and Happiness
September 18, 2019
Essential oils are one of my most favourite natural products. They are so versatile! You can use them for cleaning, stimulating your senses, removing nasty odors, treating ailments…so many great things!
Essential oils are derived from plants, and distilled to extrapolate the pure oil “essence” of the plant. Essential oils can also be obtained through chemical processes, however this method is not a true essential oil, as the oil has contaminates and is no longer pure.
Although completely natural, plants can still be poisonous if ingested, can cause skin irritation or allergic reaction in some people, so you need to be careful when using essential oils as they are in a highly concentrated form.
Anyway, my favourite way to use essential oils is through a diffuser. When I was first gifted with our diffuser, I wondered what the heck I was supposed to do with it. I never imagined I’d ever actually have a use for it. I think it sat in its box for about 6 months. I can’t even remember exactly what made me use it the first time. I think it was because my husband decided to give it a try, and used it in his Man Cave. I liked the subtle scent that filled the room when it was on. Anyway, I relocated it to the main living area and it’s been one of my favourite household items since!

So, What is a Diffuser?
Diffusers are little units that disperse the scent of essential oil so the fragrance is spread throughout the room. They can come in 4 different types;
Ultrasonic– these diffusers break down the essential oils into tiny particles through ultrasonic vibration that are emitted with water vapour. These operate very quietly.
Heat– these diffusers use heat to evaporate essential oils. The process of heating the oils can change molecular structure of the oil, and cause the benefits of the oil to be lost.
Evaporative– these diffusers also use evaporation method. In this design, a fan is used to evaporate the oil from the absorbent material more quickly.
Nebuliser– these diffusers works in a similar fashion to a perfume spray. Air is blown across a tube causing vacuum. The essential oil is drawn up and out in the form of a small mist. The integrity of the essential oil is 100% as there are no other contaminates.
Since my diffuser revelation, and learning more and more about the benefits of different oils, I am now the proud owner of 3 ultrasonic diffusers (not obsessed at all!). All 3 of my diffusers are from Dusk. These diffusers do a fantastic job and come in a variety of different styles. They also come with a one year warranty. You can find Dusk’s Moodmist diffuser range here. These little babies aren’t cheap, but are definitely worth the money. I have previously purchased a diffuser through the Wish app, it didn’t last long, nor did it really do a great job. But, as always, you get what you pay for.
My large one is in the lounge room and happily lasts 8 hours. My other 2 are in my kids rooms and have a 1hr or 4hr timer. They can double as a night light with their colour light display. This has always a hit with Miss 3. She loves to choose what colour she wants to go to sleep to every night. I have found having diffusers in the kids’ rooms a lifesaver. They help lull the kids to sleep both by scent and by the light setting, and then when winter flu season rolls around, adding eucalyptus oil does a great job of easing overnight congestion.
Benefits of A Diffuser
Fights Flu: With the right essential oils you can ease congestion of the nose and chest associated with cold and flu. Open up stuffy airways and be able to sleep better.
Assist Brain Function: Whether you need to lift your spirits, destress, focus, or relax, you have a variety of different essentials oils at your fingertips to create the perfect mood! The sense of smell is one of our highest senses. It bypasses several neural connections our other senses go through, instead when we smell the scent is picked up by special receptors called olfactory neurons, that are connected directly to the brain. The different smells we pick up are sorted, processed and sent to the parts of our brain that determine the smell identification, our memory, and our emotions. Cool huh? That’s why a single smell can immediately bring back a particular memory you may not have known you even had.
Safer and Healthier: In contrast to chemical air fresheners, diffusing essential oils is safer because they are completely natural and free from synthesised chemicals. Many canned air fresheners contain hazardous ingredients that can be toxic to your family and life threatening to your pets. A study conducted in 2005 by the Bureau European des Unions de Consommateurs found that neurotoxins in the air after air fresheners were sprayed, produced over what is deemed to be safe to breathe in. You can read more about that here.
Eco Friendlier: There are no nasty toxins and chemicals, or empty aerosol cans to throw away.
Save You Money: A bottle of essential oil will last a very long time, as you only need a drop or two per use. You can always change the scent you want to create with your diffuser by using different oils. They just need a clean every now and then to remove old oil contaminates to maximize the essential oil benefit.
They Smell Great!: You can tailor your diffuser to whatever scent you want and make it as strong or subtle as you choose. There’s no denying the appeal of finding and crafting the perfect scent for your home. Goodbye to canned fragrance!
