Oh. My. Goodness. Where has this been my whole life? Baking paper make way for your reusable brother – silicone! Although baking paper is relatively inexpensive, over time the cost stacks up. If you are an avid baker and do not own one of these little babies, you should to get onto it pronto!
When I began my journey to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle, I had a look at a lot of the everyday things I did and items I used. I had to figure out where I could make changes that would benefit the environment but where possible, also the bank balance. I’ll be honest, it’s a lot easier investing in eco-friendly products when I know it’ll also save me more in the long run. It’s also much easier convincing other people who may be not so invested in the ‘go green’ vibe, how to make better, more sustainable changes in their own homes when there’s a money saving element.

Being a Mum, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Where else to we usually hang out?! Plus, It’s always been said that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and I have to agree. Whenever we have company over, everyone always just tends to gravitate to the kitchen. Other than preparing meals, I love spending time with my daughter whipping up something yummy too.
Through my reflection on what changes I could make around the house, I found that one thing I used a lot, was baking paper. I was burning through it! (Not literally. OK, maybe once.) So it made logical sense that the sustainable thing to do would be invest in reusable baking sheets.
I originally heard of reusable baking mats while watching Sugar Rush with my daughter. She’s only 3, but we really enjoyed watching the amazing creations that came out of that kitchen! It inspired us to come up with some of our own interesting creations…
Anyway, the baking sheets. I hadn’t even really thought about it previously. I don’t know why, it seems so obvious now! The silicone mats I purchased are from Ebay. Although they were relatively inexpensive, I have had no problem with them whatsoever. They are durable, have a strong flexible woven fiberglass core, and completely enclosed in transparent silicone. They are BPA- and PFOA-free, reusable, and nonstick. Not only do they save you money from replacing single use baking paper, but they don’t require any greasing at all. Spraying or greasing your trays are now a thing of the past, and no more paper sticking to your baked goods. Nor do they allow grease to seep through the paper in the oven, this makes your trays stay CLEAN! Which brings me to my next point; SO MUCH LESS MESS. Mums, you gotta appreciate that one! You know how you artfully bunch up the baking paper after you’ve used it to ‘contain’ the crumbs? You careful fold the corners in to avoid the left over cooked bits falling everywhere? Instead of crumbs all over the place while you’re trying to throw the paper in the bin, just rinse the mat in the sink, and put it in the dishwasher! Easy as pie!
You should be able to find silicone baking sheets at your local natural health store. If not, there’s a couple of links below where you can purchase online!
